Janhvi Kapoor defied norms onscreen as Suhana in Ulajh, and these superwomen spearheaded the project from behind the lens.
For a long time, women in films were portrayed as submissive figures, either loyal wives or doting mothers. Or an item girl! However, the portrayal of female characters has changed dramatically over time. So when the audience sees a strong female lead played effectively by a versatile actor, our chests swell with pride. This is what happened when moviegoers saw Janhvi Kapoor play a young IFS officer named Suhana in her most recent film, Ulajh. She defied preconceptions onscreen by questioning the conventional standard that claims age is a barrier to reaching high-level professions. However, Janhvi wasn’t the only superwoman on set.

Junglee Pictures produced this thriller, which advocates for women’s empowerment both onscreen and behind the camera, with several female professionals spearheading the film. Janhvi was cast in the lead role, while Atika Chohan authored the memorable dialogue.
In an interview with HT City, Atika said, “I’m so proud to have been able to create a nuanced gender lens for an engaging, progressive, mainstream film like Ulajh.” Both my producers and director gave me the flexibility I needed to build the voice and worldview for the female lead, which is unusual in my experience.”
That is not all! Janhvi worked with her first female director of photography, Shreya Dev Dube. Shreya shared her experience, saying, “It was great to be a part of a film that wasn’t afraid to show a female character in her entirety.” Meanwhile, Mansi Dhruv Mehta was named as Head of Production Design.
These female experts’ perspectives clearly showed Suhana’s persona in a much more striking way. Their hard effort on set paid off when Janhvi’s character bravely navigated a male-dominated diplomatic arena in high-stakes situations. Well, this once again demonstrates who controls the world. It’s girls!
