Josh Brolin’s career is booming as a co-star in the science fiction blockbuster “Dune,” but the American actor claimed that for 20 years, “The Goonies” was the only project people knew him for.
Before “Dune: Part Two” opens at the end of this month, Brolin, 56, talked about how his early playing career spanned two decades, starting with the cult 1985 kids’ adventure picture in which he played the young hero’s older brother.
Since then, he has starred in several successful films, including “Avengers” (2015), “Milk” (2008), “No Country For Old Men” (2007), and for which he received an Oscar nomination.
“I had only the Goonies for twenty years before those breakthroughs.” I worked on a lot of projects, but nothing really noteworthy, with the possible exception of David O. Russell’s debut film, “Flirting With Disaster,” he said reporters.
Born to Hollywood actor James Brolin, he grew up to be an avid reader of science fiction.
“I grew up in the country around horses… so I didn’t know anything outside of that existed,” stated the man.
However, he quickly came upon the works of science fiction writers Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Frank Herbert, whose “Dune” novels were published long before the current film trilogy by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
Getting to know “Elvis”
Following the triumph of Villeneuve’s “Dune” (2021), the first film in the new series, Brolin and his A-list co-stars were brought back together for the.
Actor Timothee Chalamet from “Wonka” portrays the sour mentor and companion of disinherited prince Paul Atreides, who he plays as Gurney Halleck.
This time, Brolin collaborated with Hans Zimmer, the movie’s composer, to create a song for his persona that is included on the fictitious nine-string baliset in the film. The lyrics were written by Brolin.
Brolin stated that during the desert sequences, which were shot 100 kilometers (60 miles) outside of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, there was nothing but the crew and the sand.
The Californian talked about the bonds he formed on set with Oscar candidate Florence Pugh for “Little Women” and “Dune” newbie Austin Butler, who plays Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic.
“I got super close with Austin, I’ve stayed close with Florence,” he stated.
Butler, who most recently starred in the World War II drama series “Masters of the Air” starring Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, portrays the sociopath Feyd-Rautha in the futuristic Dune universe.
“I thought that he did a phenomenal job with that role,” remarked Brolin. “I look at that and what he did and saw his work ethic on set and I was very impressed, very proud.”
Brolin claimed Butler was frustrated with people’s obsession with his “Elvis” portrayal, saying he wanted to move on and concentrate on other movies but that fans insisted he “talked like Elvis” long after the movie was over.
“You had Elvis for seven months,” Butler was told by Brolin in the past. “I spent 20 years with Goonies. Give up.”
