Ranbir Kapoor breaks silence on backlash for Animal: I don’t really agree with them

The Ranbir Kapoor-starring film went on to become a hit, despite being chastised for encouraging male toxicity. It was released in December of last year.

Despite receiving a polarizing response, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, which was released in December of last year, became a major box office hit. Now, for the first time, actor Ranbir Kapoor has spoken out about the criticism, claiming that social media caused turmoil. During a visit on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast People by WTF, Ranbir revealed that some members of the Indian film business had conveyed their unhappiness to him.

When the picture was released, it sparked a heated controversy among reviewers and audiences about its portrayals of masculinity and violence.

Ranbir’s Response

When the host stated that films should not be a source of morality for society and should be used solely for entertainment, Ranbir explained that this was the purpose behind Animal, but it was misinterpreted.

Social media caused pandemonium. They needed something to speak about, so they went all out, alleging the picture was misogynistic. Your efforts result in… I know the filmmaker made Kabir Singh, who had the same issue; hard effort is lessened. Because it received this classification, which is incorrect, the perception remained with this film. So, while the broad audience may talk well of the picture, many people I meet will tell me, ‘You shouldn’t have done this film; we are so disappointed in you. And many individuals in the film industry stated the same thing. I discreetly apologize, saying, ‘Sorry, I won’t do it again.’ I don’t necessarily agree with them, but I’m at the point in my life where I don’t dispute with anyone. If you do not like my work, I will apologize and promise to try harder the next time,” he stated.

The actor admitted that he accepted to play Animal to get away from his “good boy” persona on screen.

“I had always pursued a career path in which I played nice roles, attempted to convey positive social themes, and portrayed the ‘good guy,’ or the coming-of-age romantic image that I possessed. So, I thought this was pretty daring and adult-rated. I was worried that the crowd would not accept me. Even though the picture grossed a lot of money and received a lot of praise, a large portion of the audience thought it was misogynistic and incorrect in some sense,” he continued.

Ranbir was asked if he would do the film over again, and he responded yes. Ranbir explained that he has reached a plateau in his career and believes Animal was the right film at the right moment to push it to the next level.
