Openstax And Google's Gemini Apps Collaborate
In an effort to increase access to pertinent, reliable educational content, OpenStax, the biggest nonprofit publisher of open educational resources (OER) worldwide and a Rice University affiliate, today announced a collaboration with Google. Through this collaboration, Google Gemini will be able to find, search for, and reference the more than 70 openly licensed, peer-reviewed textbooks in the OpenStax library. Gemini users in the US who are 18 years of age or older will have access to these resources beginning in August 2024.
Gemini uses Google’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) models to enable users to chat safely and securely. With its customized study tools and advice, Gemini may be utilized as a collaborative thought partner to help educators and students come up with new ideas and empower students of all skill levels. Users can ask questions like “@OpenStax explain the concept of supply and demand?” to activate OpenStax in Gemini and receive precise answers based on OpenStax content.
This integration is consistent with OpenStax’s mission to democratize knowledge by freely disseminating excellent OER for educational purposes that have an influence on both educators and students. According to OpenStax, the main tenets guiding AI technology are accuracy, attribution, accessibility, and maintaining academic integrity. AI is becoming more and more integrated into digital learning settings.
“OpenStax and Google have a common, ethical vision for using AI in education,” states OpenStax director and founder Richard Baraniuk. “We think inclusive and accurate content should be offered via AI learning technologies. These ideals are embodied in our integration with Gemini, which gives instructors and students another way to access our excellent content via a reliable technology partner.
According to Jack Krawczyk, senior director of product management at Gemini Experiences, “learning is one of the most popular ways people use Gemini, which is why we’re excited to partner with the most trusted publisher of high-quality, open educational content worldwide.” “We’re excited to offer more assistance to teachers and kids. Gemini is able to develop engaging learning experiences that stimulate critical thinking, pique students’ curiosity, and enable more students to learn effectively by building on high-quality, rich, and targeted information.
OpenStax.org will remain the free online destination for all OpenStax resources, available in all forms and in their entirety. There are still reasonably priced textbooks available for people who prefer paper versions of their educational resources.
