‘Not dishy enough’.
In a recent interview with Anthony Masons on CBS Sunday Morning, he discussed how he did not like playing Mr Darcy in the film as much, wishing he had loved it more and been “less worried”.
“I feel horrible admitting that, but I did. There were times when I had a fantastic time, but I wish I had enjoyed it more and been less concerned about it. I just felt a little miscast, like I wasn’t dishy enough, or something, but it worked out. I believe the most nice thing that occurs to me now is that people remark, ‘Well, you’re Mr. Darcy,’ and it’s been a good 20 years, so I don’t think I’m aging that badly.”
Fans disagree.
Fans of the actor remarked on the video, praising his portrayal of Mr Darcy in the film. “The fact that he wasn’t able to enjoy filming because he was too anxious about the role is exactly why he has peak Darcy energy,” a fan remarked to me. “Matthew, you might be the darciest Darcy there is,” observed another. “You are our Roman Empire baby,” stated another female enthusiast. “Sir, your little hand flex made women all over the world swoon into convulsions of vapor. Not dishy enough?! “Preposterous!!!,” joked another.
Colin Firth, who played Darcy in the 1995 television series Pride and Prejudice, appeared alongside Matthew Macfadyen in John Madden’s Operation Mincemeat. “Did you ever compare notes on your Darcy?” Asked the interviewer, Macfadyen said, “Yeah, exhaustively, extensively,” noting that two Darcys working together was a really amusing experience, and going on to discuss their time working together on the film.
Matthew also mentioned that his thoughts and sentiments after being cast as Darcy were the same as Colin’s. “You know, you feel he’s one of those iconic characters that people feel quite proprietorial about,” Matthew added, reflecting on public perception of Darcy’s character.
