Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar responded enthusiastically to actor-turned-Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan’s presentation as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”.


In a hilarious turn of events in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan’s self-introduction as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” garnered an enthusiastic response from Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The incident occurred after Bachchan, who had previously expressed her displeasure with being addressed by her husband’s name, mocked it during a session. Jaya Bachchan resents being referred to as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ in parliament, citing a lack of identity for women.

Dhankhar burst out laughing at this unexpected twist, as did numerous other MPs, including Congressman Jairam Ramesh and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha. The playful moment prompted a brief yet amusing exchange between Bachchan and Dhankhar.

Bachchan joked, “Did you have a lunch break today? No? This is why you continuously use Jairam Ji’s name. You can’t digest your food without mentioning his name.

Dhankhar replied in kind, stating, “I’ll tell you on a lighter note. I didn’t take a lunch break today, but I did have lunch with Jairam ji,” which amused the entire house. He went on: “I also want to tell you that this might be the first time that I am both yours and Amitabh ji’s fan.”

This light-hearted exchange follows Bachchan’s previous protest to being addressed as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.

On July 29, Bachchan declared unequivocally, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed,” expressing her worry about women being identified solely by their husbands’ names.

During the session, Bachchan expressed her dissatisfaction, saying, “This is something new, that women will be recognized by the names of their husbands as if they have no existence or achievements of their own.”

Jaya Bachchan, a prominent personality in both cinema and politics, married megastar Amitabh Bachchan on June 3, 1973. The couple has two children: Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan. The duo has appeared in numerous films together, including Zanjeer, Sholay, Abhimaan, Mili, Chupke Chupke, Silsila, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Since entering politics in 2004, she has been a vocal supporter of women’s rights and other social causes.
