ISLAMABAD – The sessions court in Islamabad has awarded former Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas a three-day physical remand for possessing his diplomatic passport after resigning as premier.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) brought the former AJK prime minister before Civil Judge Abbas Shah’s court. He was represented by lawyers Sabir Malik and Naveed Raza Mughal.
During the proceedings, the FIA prosecutor claimed that Sardar Tanveer Ilyas had broken the law by using his diplomatic passport to visit Saudi Arabia after stepping down as prime minister.
It was revealed to the court that his diplomatic passport had been cancelled, but he had not returned it.
The prosecutor emphasized the importance of recovering the passport from Ilyas and requested an eight-day remand for additional investigation.
In defence, one of Tanveer Ilyas’ lawyers argued that as a former prime minister, his client was entitled to use his diplomatic passport.
The lawyer informed the court that Ilyas had only used the passport during his travel to Saudi Arabia, and that his client intended to submit the diplomatic passport in court.
At this point, the FIA prosecutor said Tanveer Ilyas had practically admitted to the alleged crime by showing his passport.
Despite the prosecutor’s request for an eight-day physical remand, the court only granted a three-day remand for additional inquiry.
