Disabled Woman Left With A Bed Constructed For Her Aged Eight.
The family of a young woman with serious disabilities claims she is still reliant on a specialized bed created for her when she was eight years old.
Taylor Crowe, 19, was born with significant brain damage, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy and requires beds to keep her from falling out and injuring herself.
Her mother, Emma Crowe, is now fundraising for a dedicated enclosed bed at the family home as well as a portable one after being unable to obtain financing from their council.
Anglesey Council has been contacted for comment.
Mrs. Crowe stated that her daughter qualifies for respite care, which means that the family can apply for assistance while taking a break from caregiving responsibilities—but that without a portable bed, Taylor was at risk of being injured when outside of their home.
“It really would be something to be able to have a break,” Emma said, adding that she and her husband, Peter, wished to spend time with their two sons, ages 11 and 16.
“We have had all these years we haven’t been able to do anything with our other kids and enjoy our family time,” she told me.
Mrs. Crowe expressed her hope that by giving Taylor respite care and a bed that meets her needs, the other family members would be able to spend more time together.
“If we wanted to go to Alton Towers with the boys, Taylor would be cared for,” she told me.
Mrs. Crowe noted that she did not want to “appear like I’m complaining,” but that the situation is often difficult, particularly finding time to spend with the couple’s two sons.
She stated that she had been hesitant to accept help for Taylor for a long time since “she’s my baby.”.
“I’ve been scared to leave her with other people, but I have to think of my other kids,” she told me.
The family has now established a fundraising campaign to raise funds for the beds on their own.
“If I had the money, I would go and buy it all myself,” she told me.
On the GoFundMe page, the family stated that doctors did not expect Taylor to “live this long,” but she has been “defying the odds from day one.”
Emma stated that there are “constant challenges” in caring for Taylor, including taking the entire family out to eat because many establishments do not have wheelchair access.
