Design faults could cause a three-month or longer delay in the introduction of chip maker Nvidia’s future artificial-intelligence chips, the Information reported on Friday.
The setback could have an impact on customers such as Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google, and Microsoft, who have jointly ordered tens of billions of dollars in chips, according to people who work on Nvidia chip and server gear.
The AI chip startup debuted the Blackwell chip series in March, replacing its previous flagship AI processor, the Grace Hopper Superchip, which was aimed to accelerate generative AI applications.
“As we have previously stated, Hopper demand is very strong, broad Blackwell sampling has begun, and production is on track to ramp in the second half,” an Nvidia spokeswoman said in an emailed statement in reaction to the article.
Microsoft said it had nothing to add, and Meta and Google did not immediately respond to queries for comment.
Nvidia told Microsoft and another major cloud service provider this week of a delay in the production of its most powerful AI chip in the Blackwell series, according to the Information, citing a Microsoft employee and another source familiar with the situation.
