Following a meeting with Indonesia’s minister of communications, the head of Ant Group’s international business was quoted by the media on Friday as saying that the company is in talks with the country to introduce its well-liked cross-border payment service, Alipay+.
Alipay+, which was introduced in 2020, gives international retailers and e-wallets the technological know-how and services they need to allow their customers to utilize their local e-wallets to make payments in other markets.
The CEO of Ant Group’s foreign business group, Peng Yang, was quoted by the newspaper Kompas as stating that the company was hoping to launch Alipay+ this year and that it was seeking direction from Indonesia’s central bank to operate in Indonesia.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by Ant Group or Bank Indonesia. Alibaba Group, a major player in Chinese e-commerce, has a finance affiliate called Ant Group.
