Battle at the Garbage Dump, the first of the two last Haikyu films, reclaimed its No. 2 spot at the Japan box office ahead of its international release.
Detective Conan has extended its wonderful sixth-week run at the Japanese box office, regularly outperforming all other film premieres. Despite three new films hitting the ranking this past weekend (May 17-19, 2024), the 27th anime feature in the Case Closed franchise remains undefeated.
Among other anime titles that landed in the Top 10 Weekend Audience rankings, the first of the two final Haikyuu films entered its 14th week on the chart. Meanwhile, the Blue Lock film fell in its sixth week on the top-grossing weekend movies ranking.
Both Toho Animation premieres, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram and Haikyu The Movie: Battle at the Garbage Dump, drew large audiences. While the former attracted 278,000 people from Friday to Sunday, earning 408 million yen, the Haikyu film drew 141,000 people, generating 213 million yen.

Haikyu’s success in Japan prior of its international debut
The Haikyu final movie jumped from No. 9 to No. 2 this weekend. Its total earnings have already reached 10.6 billion yen, with 7.46 million spectators attending cinema screenings since February.
The large increase in attendance this weekend was due to the exclusive distribution of the limited edition manga copy, Haikyu Volume 33.5 One More Time!, to moviegoers as a final admission gift. Volume 33.5 was distributed beginning Saturday, May 18, and was also given out as a reward for admission during the film’s opening week earlier this year.
The penultimate film in the renowned anime franchise is set to release in international theaters next week, likely opening the door to even larger numbers from global audiences.
