Anurag Kashyap, a filmmaker, discussed why big-budget films fail at the box office, blaming it on actors’ high-maintenance entourages and demands. In an interview with Humans of Cinema, Anurag stated that much of the money spent on film production is not spent on making the film itself, but on catering to the demands of the stars. Anurag Kashyap says a huge budget was allocated to stars.
He stated, “I’ve never seen so many vanity vans on my set as I did on Sacred Games… That is how the culture started. Then you are unable to reverse the situation. The technical crew, who had previously been unpaid, are now receiving compensation. It’s fair in a way. However, a large number of additional items began to arrive.
When asked about some big-budget films that flopped recently, Anurag stated, “They aren’t spending just on the film. People should understand that when we make a film, we are working and creating something. It is not a holiday, nor is it a picnic.
A lot of the money spent does not go towards making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia and the entourage. You’re shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be dispatched three hours away to get you that five-star burger.”
