LAHORE – On Wednesday, the Lahore High Court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to set up new election tribunals.
Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC, while admitting a petition filed by veteran lawyer and top PTI leader Salman Akram Raja, ordered the ECP to constitute new judicial tribunals in light of Chief Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmed Khan’s letter.
In a brief ruling, the court stated that the ECP could not organize another panel until the chief justice withdrew the list of names sent.
Salman Akram Raja has petitioned the high court for the establishment of more tribunals. He had named the chief election commissioner as a party in his petition.
Raja claimed in the petition that election tribunals had been established in other provinces’ high courts, but no new tribunals had been formed despite a letter from the LHC chief justice to the ECP, which was causing a delay in the processing of election-related appeals.
The petitioner had requested the formation of extra election tribunals in the high court by a formal order.
