On Wednesday, OpenAI and News Corp. launched a “multi-year global partnership” to access current and archival stories from News Corp. outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, and The New York Post.
As part of the agreement, OpenAI will be allowed to display content from News Corp.-owned outlets within its ChatGPT chatbot in response to user inquiries. The startup will also be permitted to utilize News Corp.’s material “to enhance its products,” which is most likely to train its artificial intelligence algorithms.
According to the press release, News Corp. will also “share journalistic expertise to help ensure the highest journalism standards are present across OpenAI’s offering” as part of the arrangement.
“We believe a historic agreement will set new standards for veracity, virtue, and value in the digital age,” Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp., said in a statement Wednesday. “We are delighted to have found principled partners in Sam Altman and his trusty, talented team who understand the commercial and social significance of journalists and journalism.”
The development comes after Reddit said on Thursday that it will collaborate with OpenAI, allowing the ChatGPT creator to train its AI models on Reddit material. According to a release, OpenAI will have access to Reddit’s Data application programming interface, or API, “which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit,” as part of the agreement.
In exchange, Reddit will begin to offer specific AI features to users and moderators, powered by OpenAI, which will also become a Reddit advertising partner. Google launched a similar deal with Reddit in February, allowing the corporation to train its AI models, such as Gemini, on Reddit material via the platform’s API.
Last week, OpenAI released a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT, as well as an enhanced user interface, as part of its ongoing efforts to broaden the use of its popular chatbot. The update makes GPT-4 available to everyone, including OpenAI’s free users, said Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati in a livestreamed event last week.
Murati stated that the new model, GPT-4o, is “much faster,” with greater text, video, and audio capabilities. OpenAI stated that it eventually intends to allow users to video communicate with ChatGPT.
