As part of the Biden administration’s efforts to lessen dependency on China and Taiwan for technology, the United States and Mexico will collaborate to investigate semiconductor supply chain potential, the State Department announced on Thursday.
The partnership is a result of the U.S. CHIPS Act, a law passed in 2022 that established a $500 million fund for projects involving allies and partners aimed at improving the semiconductor supply chain.
“Manufacturing of essential products ranging from vehicles to medical devices relies on the strength and resilience of the semiconductor supply chain,” the government stated in a statement.
According to the government, the partnership would start with an evaluation of Mexico’s current semiconductor industry, legal environment, and labor requirements.
A request for comment regarding the announcement made by the State Department was not immediately answered by Mexico’s economic minister.
